On the 15 May 2018 Alzheimer’s Support opened a new Dementia Centre in Warminster. The Wiltshire charity spent nine months renovating the first floor of the Victorian silk mill in Beech Avenue to create a light-filled space for its third, and largest, day club.
The Utley Foundation visited the day centre last month and were blown away by the vast amount of musical activity on offer to their club members.
Musical activities ranged from residents playing percussion instruments, to a quite area to listen to vinyl, singing groups to live music being a regular feature at the day centre. There is even a mural of the famous Beatles Abbey Road Album Front Cover on the wall.
Head of Day Care, Grant Newton’s son is a Pro Bass Player. Grant was very much involved in helping him establish himself as a working musician and first record deal when only a teenager. His enthusiasm and love for music is intoxicating and the club members that we spoke too were clearly enjoying the music on offer. Many of the images on our website have been taken at this day centre. We think they speak for themselves.
The Old Silk Works Club is centred around a spacious main room with an openplan kitchen, an indoor garden and quiet, retro-fitted lounge. It has space for 12 members each day, four days a week, and will host an art group for people living with dementia and their carers every Monday. The centre also has a welcoming reception area and office space for the charity’s Dementia Advisers and Home Support coordinator for the area.
Opening a dementia centre in the town is a long-cherished dream for Alzheimer’s Support. To find out more about this amazing charity click here.
